It is important to understand the demographics served by higher education student disability services offices, e.g. types of disability, race & ethnicity, gender, etc. Knowing this information will allow for a disability service professional to anticipate resources for academic adjustments and support services, space, staffing and budget.

 

Learning Outcomes:

1. Understand the population of students with disabilities attending post-secondary intuitions.

2. Predict the demographics for a hypothetical institution of higher education.

Dear Disability Services Professional;

Thanks for leading our efforts to start a Disability Services Office. In order to best make the case for the necessity; I will need some data to support my request.

1) Given our current overall enrollment as an undergraduate, public institution of 10,000 students, how many students with disabilities should we expect to serve? 

2) What do you estimate would be the specific percentage and numeric distribution of disabilities among those identifying for services (i.e. number of students who identify with\as learning disabilities, blind\low vision\, Deaf, etc.)? 

3) What other expected demographics can you share?

 

I’ll pass this directly along to the Budget Office; therefore, please send as a Memo. It doesn’t have to be too long (500-600 words) remember those folks always prefer that much of this type of data be displayed in easy-to-read tables.

Please make sure to provide specific numbers.
